velosynth: open-source bicycle interaction synthesizer

Wow. This is as Portland as it gets. It had to come from this tiny corner of the globe. The velosynth is a pretty awesome invention from local makers, Effalo. I’d write a custom patch that would make my bike sound like a LightCycle from Tron.

Nice work, fellas.

Uncanny Valley: Consider The Source – Blowback

Consider The Source will be available for digital download on Thursday, June 10th 2010.

download

Here’s the last bonus cut Im releasing before the album drops.  It’s an Indo Jazz influenced stream of consciousness type of joint titled “Blowback”.  Heavy drums, tons of percussion and lots of vibed out Eastern instrumentation.  I really wanted this one to feel and sound seamless.  Many thanks to Mr. Jeigh for the “crate assistance” on this track.  Whenever I got stuck, he came through with HEATERS!

Click here (or above).  It includes a 320k version, the artwork for the single and some notes.  This song goes well with Afghan Tea and Astral Traveling.

Uncanny Valley: Consider The Source – Operation Brainstorm

Oye!  It’s been a hectic few weeks and I still have some loose ends to tie up…so I’ve decided to postpone the album release for a couple weeks.  It’s one the way.  I swear!!!

download

Until then, here’s a bonus cut called “Operation Brainstorm”.  I couldn’t find a way to fit this track into the context of the album.  It’s definitely the charismatic oddball of the group.  Heavy, fast and spazzed out.  Is it Cyberpunk?  Maybe it’s Heshtronica?  I wonder if iTunes has a genre for that…..?

Click here (or above).  It includes a 320k version, the artwork for the single and some notes.  Use this song to wake up your hungover roommate or as a soundtrack for breaking/burning things.

yours truly,

UV

Uncanny Valley: Consider The Source – Purple Flavor

Here’s another free song for download from my new album, Consider The Source.  It will be available on Tuesday, May 18th.  I’ll be posting additional information soonly.

download

This track, entitled “Purple Flavor” is a cosmic synth jam grounded by a massive Big Beat break and a heavy laser bass melody.  For those that don’t know – I love me some synth and you’ll hear them all over the new record.  I’ve been known to get lost in patches, turning knobs until I hit diminishing returns…”Idle hands are the devil’s workshop”…so they say.  This was another track that really came together in the final stages of production.  The sinewous lead synth ended up working as a nice counterpoint to the percolating space chimes.

The song was inspired by the synthesis work that’s commonly heard on Prog, New Wave, and Electronic records from the mid-to-late 70’s.  Im a huge fan of Malcom Cecil and I think his influence is audible in many of my songs.  They had such great tones on those albums and this was my attempt at recreating some of those sounds.  Consider The Source, as a whole, features a ton of keys.  You’ll hear Grand Piano, Moog, Rhodes, Hammond, Arp, Farfisa and a few that I can’t name because their origins are unknown.

You can download the track here.  It includes a 320k version, the artwork for the single and some notes.  This song goes well with a pair of Blue Blockers and a mid-afternoon bike ride in the sun.  As always, thank you for listening – and thank you for the continued support.

“…you better believe it, star-buddy!”

Happy May Day: Apple Death Grip Murders Lala

How fitting that last night at 11:59pm I received the email below:

I’ve been an Apple devotee for many years now, but their draconian security polices and their control freak obsessiveness is reaching a critical threshold.  Lala was a truly innovative music discovery site that actually provided the consumer with a choice.  Unlike iTunes, you could stream an entire album for free.  After the first listen it would play back 30-sec clips and you would have the option to either buy a download of the album (or individual songs) or buy a web album that would be available for streaming from your Lala account.  It appears as if Apple only accepts competition when it’s rival is in a distant second place.  Anything that challenges the status quo will quickly & quietly be acquired and dismantled.  Apple helped revolutionize the music industry and now it seems they’ve succumbed to the perversion of power.  They’re quickly becoming a modern digital dictator, a post-industrial monopoly that threatens the livelihood of the musicians and artists that inspired the creation of the iTunes platform.

Uncanny Valley: Consider The Source

It’s true.  The new album, Consider The Source, is finally done!  It’s long overdue (for too many reasons to mention), but it will finally be released on May 18th.  I’ll be posting more info in the coming days and weeks.  Until then, here’s a free song for download….

download

This track, entitled “Idle Argument” is an organ-driven psych burner.  It was my attempt at writing a “melt-yr-face-off” kinda song in the style of Goblin or a heavier, dirtier version of Lesiman.  Pounding drums, 60’s style short-scale bass, tremolo fuzz madness, and a healthy dose of Space Echo.  Add some horn bursts, some trippy ethereal vocals….slather on the magma-laden organ and BAM, it’s done!!!

In all honesty it really didn’t happen that fast.  It was a demo for well over two years and really came together within the last few weeks of finishing the album.  Joining me on the track are Kevin Robinson (Viva Voce, Blue Giant) on bass and Sebastian Bibb-Barrett (Federale) on trumpet.  Infinite thanks to them both for helping me bring this track to life.

You can download the track here.  It includes a 320k version, the artwork for the single and some notes.  Thank you for listening.  I hope you enjoy it with some friends.

Keep on, Keepin’ on
